Core Subjects

English

Our aim is for each child to develop skills in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing and to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively.

Speaking and Listening

We intend to encourage children to speak confidently and listen to what others have to say.  Children will learn to speak clearly, thinking about the needs of their listeners.  They work in groups and as a class, joining in discussions and making relevant points.  They also learn to listen carefully to what others are saying, so that they can remember the main points.  Children will learn to use language in imaginative ways and express their ideas and feelings when assuming roles and drama activities.

Reading

Our aim is for children to develop interest and pleasure in reading as they learn to read confidently and independently.  Children will learn to focus on words and sentences and how they fit into whole texts.  They will also be taught to use a range of strategies to make sense of what they read.  A wide range of literature will be used and includes stories, poems, plays and non-fiction books.

Writing

Our aim is for children to enjoy writing and to recognise the value of it as a means of communicating meaning in both narrative and non-fiction texts.  In addition, as children develop an awareness of writing for different purposes and audiences, they will engage in:

  • Communicating to others
  • Creating imaginary worlds
  • Exploring experiences
  • Organising and explaining information

The range of forms of writing that the child will learn includes narratives, poems, notes, lists, captions, records, messages and instructions.
Children will be taught spelling strategies, a legible style of handwriting and the importance of clear and neat presentation.

Mathematics

In Mathematics we aim to enable each child to:

  • develop understanding of concepts in every aspect of Maths, number, algebra,

      space and shape and data handling at relevant levels, with practical experience
      as appropriate;

  • use and apply maths in everyday situations in and beyond the classroom;
  • become familiar with, and to use independently the language of maths;
  • develop a logical approach towards problem-solving;
  • develop persistence, perseverance and a sense of enjoyment.

Science

Our aim is for children to observe, explore and ask questions about living things, materials and phenomena.  Children will begin to work together to collect evidence to help them answer questions and to link this to simple scientific ideas.  They will learn to evaluate evidence and consider whether tests or comparisons are fair, and share these ideas; and communicate them using scientific language, drawings and charts.

Information and Communication Technology

We want to encourage in the children confidence and understanding in the use of computers and ICT tools across the curriculum through a variety of activities.  Each classroom is equipped with two computers and relevant software and all classes have Interactive Whiteboards.   They are used to enhance and support learning across the curriculum. The children will start to use ICT to develop their ideas and record their creative work. The networked computer suite enables us to teach ICT skills, which may then be used to enhance learning in other curriculum areas.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

This forms an integral part of the school curriculum.  Religious Education is taught in accordance with the agreed syllabus, which the LEA has drawn up within the terms of the Education Acts, in consultation with representatives of various faiths.

Collective Worship takes place daily and mainly reflects Christian traditions and takes into account other world Religions.  Parents may ask to withdraw their children from Religious Education and Collective Worship, and where they do so, children would normally be expected to occupy these lessons with private study.
