Pastoral Care

We ask parents to let us have phone numbers of places of work, please, in case of accident or illness.  Please notify the school by telephone or letter, if possible, of any absence or intended late arrival.  Please also confirm in writing the reason for absence when you child returns to school.  If this is not done the absence will be considered to be an unauthorised absence and this will mean reporting to the Education Welfare Officer.  This is now required by law.

Health and Welfare

Please let us know if your child suffers from any serious or recurring medical condition, allergy or any difficulty with sight, hearing, or speech.  Such information is treated as confidential and will help us to help your child.
Following advice from South Gloucestershire's Health and Safety Officer, we adhere to the following guidelines:

  • The wearing of jewellery in PE, which would include the wearing of chains, watches, rings, earrings and necklaces is prohibited on grounds of safety.
  • The only exception to the above is in the case of recently pierced ears.  In this case a stud earring can be worn provided the earring is completely covered. (A plaster or similar being acceptable). The ear should have healed within about 6 weeks and after this time the earring must be removed or covered by a plaster or medical tape.

Medical and Dental Inspections

There may be medical inspections held at the school.  If you have any concerns please contact a member of the school office staff who will inform the School Nurse.

No child will be seen by the School Doctor or Nurse without your permission.

Five-year-old children will be examined by the School Dentist.

Illness during school hours

If we think your child is ill, you will be contacted so that you can collect your child.  Minor bumps and bruises are given simple First Aid by a member of staff.  If there is a more serious accident we must seek medical attention and of course, will do all we can to contact parents first.

In cases of sickness or diarrhoea, we ask you to keep your child home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have subsided - even if he or she seems better - as this is very infectious and spreads quickly at school.

Medicines

Medication e.g. antibiotics may be administered by key members of staff who have agreed to undertake this responsibility.

Parents will be required to obtain the appropriate form from the office giving details of child’s condition, medication, dosage, time to be given etc. I shall personally look at each individual request and decide whether or not it is appropriate for medication to be administered at school.

This does not alter the fact that children should only return to school following an illness when they are fit end well enough to cope with a busy day at school. However this may help parents when a course of prescribed medication needs to be completed.

Child Protection

School staff, both teaching and non-teaching play an important part in recognising and taking appropriate action in cases of suspected child abuse, because of their day-to-day contact with pupils during term time.

All staff are instructed to report any suspicions to the Headteacher the designated teacher for child protection who is required, under set policy procedures, to alert the Social Services Department.

Child abuse is a particularly sensitive issue and involves strong emotions and feelings for those involved, particularly parents.  However, whatever parents may feel about the situation, it needs to be appreciated that it is a requirement for school staff to report, in line with set procedures, any suspicion of child abuse.  If this is not done, a member of staff could be deemed to have acted improperly.

Parents may seek guidance and advice from the School's Educational Welfare Office or contact the Social Services Department if necessary.

Our Child Protection policy is available in school.

Complaints

If you have any worries or concerns we very much hope that you will come and discuss the matter straight away so that problems may be resolved as soon as possible.  Our Procedures for Complaints about the Curriculum, RE or Worship may be viewed in school and is available on request from the Headteacher.
